The Australian and New Zealand biotechnology companies are performing surprisingly well, despite low share prices, poor media interest and funding difficulties, according to a recent report by Innovation Dynamics Pty Ltd.
The study focused on companies’ underlying operational performance indicators and the full results will be published in the seventh edition of the BioIndustry Review – Australia and New Zealand, to be launched on 21 February 2008.
The data and the analysis reveal that a number of major biotechnology and medical devices companies will complete pre-market clinical trials in the next couple of years and launch new products. In addition, the study found that the number of companies involved in clinical trials increased 40% over the 12 month period, with over half of these companies entering into later stage, phase II or III trials.

2007 was a turbulent year for investors and, according to the lack of media interest, the life science sector appeared mostly unloved. Fundraising was especially difficult for the smaller companies and across the board share prices and market capitalisation decreased throughout the year. However some companies, especially CSL and those companies in late stage product development showed an increase in value and were favoured over platform and tool box companies. These major life science companies appear to be meeting their milestones and there has been an unprecedented growth in clinical trials with real prospects for some products reaching the market in 2009. Twenty one new biotech firms were formed in FY2007 and some $161m was raised by nine new biotech IPO’s.
We will discuss the trends in the industry over the past few years and look at the present environment for biotech with particular perspectives on fundraising, business models and the life science company life cycle.
Our guest speaker for the evening is Mr Graeme Kaufman.
Mr Graeme Kaufman: Chief Investment Officer, Strategic Life Sciences Limited .Graeme was formerly with CSL in a variety of positions in research, manufacturing and corporate over a period of 35 years. He was Finance Director at the time of the public float of CSL in 1994 and was one of the major drivers of that process. In 1999 he joined Circadian Technologies as an executive director and took up positions on several subsidiary boards. He was involved in the original concept and establishment of the new investment fund, Strategic Life Sciences, which he joined full time as Chief Investment Officer in November 2007. SLS is a new Melbourne and San Francisco-based global health and life sciences investment company committed to raise AU$400 million. It will invest in mature, emerging and start-up firms in specialist pharmaceuticals, healthcare services, biotechnology (including medical, agricultural and industrial), diagnostics and medical devices. Graeme has a wealth of experience and knowledge of biotech operations, investment and strategy and will look at the trends in the present crop of offerings and the rationale for a new large fund and its approach to this market.
The 2008 BioIndustry Review: Australia and New Zealand, will also be launched at the forum. Come and meet ID’s skilled and growing team at the event.

Australian scientists are recognised for world class innovation but historically the challenge has been translating that work into commercial success. Making connections to companies and markets overseas is critically important to this process.
Two Australians in leading life sciences companies have been given a unique opportunity to build their networks within the global arena as the result of an important initiative from Merck Sharp & Dohme and Advance – the Advancing BioBusiness Award. This Award, which aims to build commercialisation capability, enabled the two scientists to attend BIO 2007, as well as participate in a tailored program of meetings with leading organisations involved in the life sciences sector, organised through Advance's extensive global network.
Sharing their experiences as the 2007 winners of the Advancing BioBusiness Award will be:
John Lambert is the Executive Director, Drug Discovery, Biota Holdings Ltd. In this role, he is responsible for the collaborative management of the company's IP portfolio, assisting drug discovery teams in determining directions and priorities and managing technical interactions with strategic partners.
Andrew Wilks is the Chief Scientific Officer for Cytopia, which has grown from its origins in Andrew's lab at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research to become an ASX-listed company which is seeking new drugs for cancer, immune disease and cardiovascular disease, with a focus on kinases as drug targets.
We'll also have members of the two partner organisations, Merck Sharp & Dohme and Advance:
Will Delaat is the Managing Director of Merck Sharp & Dohme Australia (MSD), the Australian subsidiary of the global research-based pharmaceutical company Merck & Co Inc. Since 1995, MSD has brought more than 20 new medicines to Australians and provides ongoing support of innovative research and science in Australia. Mr Delaat is also Chair of the Pharmaceuticals Industry Council, which brings together the innovative, generic and biotechnology industries to represent a whole-of-sector approach to investment in the sector.
Ken Allen is the Chairman Emeritus of Advance. Prior to his current appointment as Senior Advisor, Asia Pacific for UBS Invest Bank, Ken was the Australian Consul General in New York until February 2006. The report was presented on 21 February 2006 to the OECD Working Party on Biotechnology and was launched nationally on 30 March 2006. The report includes a comprehensive literature reviews as well as discussion of the role of indicators, surveys, case studies and economic modelling in developing mechanisms to measure the economic impact of biotechnology, now and in the future. At the Australian launch Dr Iain Gillespie, Head, OECD Biotechnology Division, said "Biotechnology will become a micro-economic driver to growth similar to what we have seen for information and communications technologies. Australia is one of three countries that have made a significant contribution to international thinking on biotechnology's impact and what it will mean for society and economic development. This report is a substantial first step towards establishing a framework for measurement of biotechnology's broad impact and the OECD congratulates you on this initiative." The Department of Industry Tourism and Resources has called for comments on the proposed methodology by 30 May 2006. Click here to view presentation

Capitalising on Stem Cells
The potential of stem cells to treat intractable diseases has sparked the imagination of the public and of investors. Although the full commercial use of adult stem cells, and embryo-derived stem cells is likely to occur well into the future, there is high expectation among investors for a worthwhile commercial outcome. However the structure of businesses involving cell based therapies, the revenue models and the ethical and legal issues need exploring and that is the basis of this open discussion forum.
Our expert panel to set the scene are Professor Robert Jansen, Medical Director, Sydney IVF Limited and Dr Dianna DeVore, Chief Operating Officer, Australian Stem Cell Centre
